• In der Beschäftigung mit Fragen der Forschungsunterstützung und dem Anbieten von unterstützenden Infrastrukturen und Services lautet eine Einsicht, dass einerseits Menge und Struktur der Informationen im 21. Jahrhundert kritisch (geworden) scheinen und dass andererseits der zielführende Zugriff auf Informations- bzw. Bibliotheksbestände vor diesem Hintergrund entscheidend ist. Lässt man sich ferner auf den Gedanken ein, dass der Zufall im wissenschaftlichen Arbeits- bzw. Rechercheprozess immer wieder begegnet und nützliche Ergebnisse zeitigt, so befindet man sich definitorisch auf dem Gebiet des Serendipitösen. Das dahinterstehende Konstrukt, Serendipity, steht dabei in Verbindung mit der Exploration von Informations- bzw. Bibliotheksbeständen; es stellt sich also die Frage, wie Bestand zunächst einmal an und für sich zu definieren ist, ferner wie eine auf der Höhe des digitalen Zeitalter agierende Bestandserschließung und -präsentation aussehen kann und welche weiteren Implikationen die (zeitgenössische) bibliothekarische Praxis, ausgehend von der Katalog- und Erschließungstheorie, bereithält. Die vorliegende Arbeit trägt den entsprechenden Forschungsstand zusammen und führt durch die Geschichte der Begriffe und Konzepte hin zur aktuellen Sichtweise auf Serendipity (vor dem Hintergrund des Informationsverhaltens). Am Ende stehen so Einsichten und Empfehlungen, wie Serendipity, Discovery und im Allgemeinen Informationsexploration in Bibliotheken jetzt und künftig zu unterstützen sein werden.
• When dealing with matters of research support and the supply of supporting infrastructures and services one insight is that on the one hand the amount and structure of information in the 21th century has seemingly become crucial, and that on the other hand the expedient access to information or library collections is decisive against this background. Keeping oneself open to the thought of accident being there again and again in the scientific working and (bibliographic) research process producing useful results, the definition of this is the serendipitous. The construct behind, serendipity, is connected with the exploration of information and library collections; thus the question comes up how collections are to be defined, furthermore how an up to date digital operating collection development and presentation may look like and which additional implications the contemporary library practice based on the catalog and collection development theory offers. The present work compiles the corresponding state of research and leads through the history of notions and concepts to the current perspective on serendipity (against the background of information seeking behavior). At the end there will be insights and recommendations how to support serendipity, discovery and information exploration in general in libraries now and in the future.
