  • This bachelor thesis explores the issue of intellectual capital and knowledge management in consulting firms and questions which degree of implementation of a knowledge management system is reasonable and appropriate in a small consulting firm. The empirical data underlying this thesis was gathered via a mixed methods approach carried out at the ARTEMEON Management Partner GmbH, an independent consulting and software company based in Ratingen, Germany. The research design consists of a quantitative survey through a self-completion questionnaire as well as qualitative investigations of knowledge management components, including an interview with the company’s managing director. The results were transferred into a framework designed to show different stages of development for each knowledge management component. This framework is based on existing literature and follows the building blocks of knowledge management according to Probst, Raub and Romhardt. To improve the status quo of knowledge management at ARTEMEON, recommendations for specific measures and control instruments were drafted, including a milestone plan to implement both strategic aspects as well as tangible operating measures. The results show that any knowledge management system and its degree of implementation are appropriate and reasonable if it is accepted and filled with life by the company’s employees. Therefore, the methods and tools presented follow a collaborative approach that divides the definition and continuous adjustment of knowledge objectives on three levels instead of a more common top-down-approach with predefined knowledge objectives. Regarding the implementation of the milestone plan at ARTEMEON, the collaborative approach intents that knowledge management is gradually given more attention and appreciation to, over time, achieve a knowledge-oriented corporate culture and work towards the goal of a so-called “knowledge culture” at the firm.
