  • The present thesis deals with the publication of the "Ethical Principles" of Library & Information Germany e.V. (BID), the Federal Union of German Library Associations from 2017 and the publication of a previous version from 2007. The aim of the thesis is to trace the development of a German professional ethics for librarians and to place it in a historical and international context. For this purpose, the background and the history of the development of the German principles as well as the codes of the US and British professional library associations and the professional code of the IFLA, an international library association, were examined and compared. In addition to the backgrounds dealing with the genesis of the above-mentioned codes, a comparison of the content of the statements and the choice of the form of presentation was also carried out. The statements of the German principles of the BID from the year 2007 were directly compared with the newly published version from 2017. The "Code of Ethics" of the US Library Association (ALA), the "Ethical Framework" of the British Chartered Institute of Library and Information (CILIP) and the "IFLA Code of Ethics for Librarians and other Information Workers" of the International Federation of Library Association and Institutions (IFLA) also had to face a comparison with the German principles of 2017. As a result of the comparisons, it can be stated that the histories of origin of the German professional codes of librarianship differ significantly from those of the British, US-American and IFLA codes. With regard to the ethical statements, many commonalities were discovered, only the type and form and the detail of the presentation of the statements is different for all mentioned codes. When comparing the newer and older version of the German Code of Ethics, both improvements and retrogressions can be observed. The results of the present study should help to classify the German ethical principles in the international publications of professional library ethics and to show which innovations and improvements must be made in order to meet with more acceptance in the profession than is currently the case.
