  • This paper outlines the transformation of a decentralised subject library at the University of Cologne into an inspiring and functional unit combining teaching/learning spaces, library services and social elements. A narrative overview provides current research on the design of hybrid learning spaces, the didactic conception of multimedia teaching-learning units, and relevant implementation examples from academic libraries. Based on the literature review and by leveraging existing potentials, the geography library in Co-logne was conceptionally reoriented and changed into a modern learning space. The library’s multimedia events promoting information literacy as well as the library learning space are closely aligned with a hybrid teaching and learning concept. The instructional concept incorporates didactic standards such as areas of expertise and frameworks. Both content and methodological direction of the courses are service-oriented, aiming to engage participants by taking into account their individual knowledge as well as academic subject-specific requirements. In the context of digital transformation, information literacy is sustainably promoted as a central key qualification. This concept can be refined collaboratively and is designed to be adapted by other disciplines and other institutions of higher learning. The newly designed learning and teaching space combines individual and social learning with library-oriented curricula in the immediate vicinity of information resources. The subject library‘s emerging learning space serves as a sanctuary of knowledge that encour-ages self-directed learning in a tranquil and inspiring environment. Within the confines of available spatial resources, adaptable areas have been designed to accommodate various learning strategies and instructional scenarios. In summary, the geography library at the University of Cologne has been transformed into a study library with the potential to become an Information Commons. As academic teaching librarians, the library staff undertake functions such as coaching and study support.
