  • The Martin-Opitz-Bibliothek is a specialized library in Herne with main emphasis on German history and culture in Eastern Europe. Most of the presently active users have experienced forced displacement during or shortly after the Second World War. Now this user group is slowly dying. It's therefore essential for the Martin-Opitz-Bibliothek (MOB) to make itself known to and attractive for a younger generation of users. The MOB is used as an example for answering the question as to how marketing concept can be utilized by specialized libraries and turned into working marketing strategies. As a starting point for a marketing strategy this work contains the evaluation not only of the library's yearly reports of the years 2000 to 2016, but also of its Facebook profile, Wikipedia article, homepage and advertising materials. This provided a good overview of the now active users and their way of using the library. It also serves to show the quantity of the MOBs national and international connections to other libraries and institutions and gives an overview of how it presents itself on the internet. Using this data, a custom marketing strategy was developed. It shows, that a mixture of three marketing concepts, the content marketing, social media marketing and the so-called guerilla marketing is the most promising choice to acquire new users and to ideally tie them to the library long term.
