  • In an acute crisis situation, caused by an accident or a catastrophe, a company is exposed to a high pressure of time and a growing pressure for action. Acute crisis situations are of particularly high public interest. In addition to dealing with the crisis a company must communicate promptly with the stakeholders directly and indirectly affected by the crisis. Crisis communication measures can be implemented via the company's corporate website and online platforms. The focus of this thesis is on the web as a primary communication medium in acute crisis situations and as a tool for companies to communicate a crisis efficiently to the stakeholders and public to successfully overcome the crisis. Online crisis communication is seen as an essential and important part of the corporate strategy in order to protect and maintain the company's reputation in a crisis situation. In this thesis the different phases of a crisis are considered as well as the advantages and disadvantages of online crisis management. For illustrating and analyzing the strategies and the process of online crisis communication the case study “Flight 4U9525", the aircraft crash of the airline Germanwings in 2015, is portrayed. Using the case study and described crisis communication models an assessment of the airline's crisis communication, based on the company's communication on the online platforms Facebook and Twitter, is provided. Based on the case study the risks and opportunities of online crisis management for companies will be described and conclusively concrete recommendations for a successful crisis communication on the web will be given.
