  • Since 2016, the Library Service Centre of North Rhine-Westphalia (hbz) and the Head Office of the Common Library Network (VZG/GBV) have been evaluating the FOLIO open-source system in a joint project. The aim is to make a qualified statement on the functional and technical suitability of FOLIO for German-speaking countries. The communication and transfer of knowledge during development and testing primarily takes place via FOLIO's community features, as is usually the case for open-source systems. However, the US-based FOLIO community for German interests is not an adequate contact for our needs, since the needs of German libraries differ from those in the USA and concern only a small part of the larger community. The development of a FOLIO community for the German-speaking world offers libraries opting to use FOLIO in the future a place to discuss their needs, concerns and problems. For this reason, the work in and with a FOLIO community set up especially for Germany represents an essential aspect in the FOLIO development project being carried out by the hbz and VZG. The aim of the present study is to identify the framework conditions and factors for the successful, long-term establishment of a German-language FOLIO community and to determine which tools are needed to make the community attractive to users and easy for them to use. For this purpose, existing communities in the library sector are being compared based on recommendations made by Amy Jo Kim, Sandra Schaffert, and Diana Wieden-Bischof. Reference models are the communities of Koha, Kuali OLE and the US FOLIO community. In this comparison, the differences as well as the similarities of the individual communities are identified in order to use the insights in developing a concept for a German-speaking FOLIO community.
