Adequate information supply in cooperative higher education (or 'dual study') : an analysis of information needs of 'dual students'

  • The higher education system as well as the academic landscape in Germany has changed in recent years, and new target groups with new information needs have emerged. Academic libraries in their role as information service providers are responding to these changes and need to adapt the information and services they provide to new requirements. 'Dual students' became a rapidly growing new target group in the German higher education market in recent years. They complete a degree program whose central characteristic is the combination of academic learning at the university with workplace training in a company. 'Dual study' takes place at two different training locations, the university and the company. Academic libraries in their role as information service providers are therefore faced with the task of providing students of this specific type of studies with specialized information as required at both study or training locations. The aim of this paper is to identify the information needs of 'dual students' through an information needs analysis in order to tailor libraries' library services more accurately and better to the needs of this specific target group. The focus will be on media services and the portfolio of various information services as well as the optimal design of accessibility to them. Using the example of the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW), one of the largest providers of dual study programs in Germany, teachers and students were interviewed in two standardized anonymized online surveys on information requirements in the dual study program.
