  • The increasing digitalisation of historical newspapers creates new expectations towards their digital representation and access. Funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the German Digital Library started work on a digital national newspaper portal in early 2019. In the long term, this portal aims to unite all digital newspaper holdings on a national level. This ambitious approach gives rise to various new technological and conceptual challenges for the portal, which can be met only partially by existing standard formats used in the digitalisation processes of historical newspapers (i.e. METS/MODS, ALTO-XML). A promising solution is the integration of the IIIF-Standard for image representation and the text-based format TEI, which is widely used in digital humanities. As a result of this integration, high-quality digitalised images can be represented and research can be supported through provisions for automated textual analysis of digital newspaper texts. A productive combination of these two technologies has hardly been realised in practice nor has it triggered considerable research so far. The aim of this thesis is to indicate advantages and disadvantages of the integration of the two technologies in research portals. The analysis is informed by practical considerations and demands currently faced by the German Digital Library in the development of their Newspaper Portal, which will be informed constructively by conclusions from this analysis in turn. This thesis’s analysis highlights the challenges of integrating both technologies into a single research portal, such as the German Digital Library’s Newspaper Portal. It indicates that the integration of both technologies can – at this point – only be achieved through extensions of the portal’s structure and the purposeful use of Applied Programming Interfaces (API). This approach opens up a crucial gateway for the optimised private and scientific usage of digital newspaper archives.
