In seiner 9.
  • The Committee for Library Standards, the interregional coordinating committee for bibliographic standards in the German-speaking area declared itself in favour of a change from the German cataloguing code RAK and data exchange format MAB to the Anglo-American standards AACR2 and MARC 21 on 6th December 2001. The Committee for Library Standards approved unanimously the internationalization of German standards at the 9th meeting on 15th December 2004, after evaluating the results of the study "Changing for international formats and codes (MARC 21, AACR2)" (MARC 21, AACR2). This study was funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). Now that nearly fifteen years of transition process have been passed, this paper is attempting to name and evaluate the required efforts and consequent work in the field of German-language Union Catalogues. However, it became quickly apparent, that it will not be possible to describe and evaluate the necessary efforts within the limited scope of a master thesis. For this reason, the focus regarding the introduction of MARC 21 in the German-speaking area has been narrowed down under the main aspect of data exchange “Bibliographic” of the Union Catalogues. This paper is examining and evaluating the work of change process with regard to the pronounced intentions by the Committee for Library Standards, the German National Library and the German Research Foundation. These goals cover not only the internationalization of the German standards for the format and cataloguing code but also the integration of German-speaking research into the international research community.
