  • Since the 1980s, the development of efficient library management systems has been a core element for successful library services dedicated to serving customer needs. National cultural institutions, too face the challenge to develop functional system structures in their international library work. The German Goethe-Institut and Instituto Cervantes of Spain are key players in this field. Both are operating the world’s largest networks of special libraries in their area of business respectively: fostering cultural exchange and promoting the study of language. This master’s thesis presents an overview of the library services of both institutions. It aims to map out a concept for future development of the Goethe-Institut’s library management system. The concept is based on a set of requirements for international use of library management systems followed by an analysis of the current state of Goethe-Institut’s „Allegro“ system and „AbsysNet“ of Instituto Cervantes.
