  • Despite mature technology, most new product developments fail on the market. The reason for this is that the needs and requirements of customers were ignored during the development process. The aim of this research is to find out whether the analysis of user-generated content on social networks is suitable for identifying these requirements so that it can be used for new product development. This will be done exemplarily for the YouTube platform using the example of the cosmetics industry. Based on the theories of the economists Clayton M. Christensen and Eric von Hippel, an own approach will be developed. The question will be answered which indicators influence the innovation potential of video content on YouTube. A total of 449 video titles were analysed. By analysing the metadata and categorizing the videos, overarching needs were identified. These are characterised by the desire for universal applicability of the products, natural ingredients, as well as simple and quick applicability. Indicators to identify relevant video content are the naming of ingredients and packaging.
