• Die Deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft in Belgien ist eine kleine Sprachgemeinschaft, dessen Bibliothekswesen bis dato marginal erforscht ist. Zentrale Untersuchungsfelder stellen diesfällig die differenten Bibliothekstypen, ihre Organisation und Zusammenarbeit sowie die bibliothekarische Ausbildung dar. Mithilfe einer empirischen Untersuchung wurden 20 öffentliche (Pfarr-)Bibliotheken, acht Mediotheken und vier Fachbibliotheken quantitativ befragt. Um ein tiefergehendes Verständnis für die übergeordnete Organisation der öffentlichen (Pfarr-)Bibliotheken zu entwickeln, erfolgten auch qualitative Umfragen mit Pfarrverbänden und einer Gemeinde sowie qualitative Interviews mit Personal aus dem Bibliothekswesen. Die Resultate zeigen, dass die Bibliotheken – trotz der limitierten Ressourcen – eine eminent wichtige Rolle in der regionalen Medien- und Informationsversorgung einnehmen. Die Vernetzung mittels des Verbundes „MediaDG“ trägt zu einer Effizienzsteigerung und positiv zu bewertenden Zugänglichkeit von Medien bei. Zugleich bestanden Herausforderungen in der Finanzierung, Personalausstattung und Digitalisierung. Insbesondere öffentliche (Pfarr-)Bibliotheken dependieren hauptsächlich von ehrenamtlicher Arbeit, welches langfristig strukturelle Unsicherheit mit sich bringt. Die bibliothekarische Ausbildung in der DG ist auf ausschließlich ein spezialisiertes, bibliothekarisches Ausbildungsmodell beschränkt und zeigt im Kontrast zu internationalen Modellen Verbesserungspotential. Investitionen in digitale Angebote, die Professionalisierung des Personals und eine nachhaltige Finanzierungsstrategie werden als essenziell für die zukünftige Entwicklung des Bibliothekswesens in der DG identifiziert.
• The German-speaking community in Belgium is a small language community whose library system has to date been marginally researched. Central areas of investigation in this regard are the different types of libraries, their organization and cooperation, as well as library education. In an empirical study, 20 public (parish) libraries, eight media libraries, and four academic libraries were quantitatively surveyed. To develop a deeper understanding of the overarching organization of public (parish) libraries, qualitative surveys were also conducted with parish associations and a municipality, along with qualitative interviews with library staff. The results show that libraries—despite the limited resources—play an extremely important role in regional media and information provision. Networking through the “MediaDG” network contributes to an increase in efficiency and positive accessibility of media. At the same time, challenges existed in financing, staffing, and digitalization. Public (parish) libraries in particular depend mainly on voluntary work, which brings with it long-term structural uncertainty. Library education in the German-speaking Community is limited to a specialized library training model and, in contrast to international models, shows potential for improvement. Investments in digital services, the professionalization of staff, and a sustainable funding strategy are identified as essential for the future development of the library system in the German-speaking Community.
